We often talk about physical health, which is undoubtedly a point of discussion on an everyday basis. When we greet someone, our knowns or strangers, we ask them ‘How Are You’, which implies we ask about their physical health. The aspect of mental health is often ignored as this is a very hidden topic, not spoken about.

Especially in the era, we live in a dynamic and competitive environment; people are running a rat-race, trying to be number 1 each time. Individuals do not have a single minute to spare, stop and reflect.

All we are doing is just rushing, trying to do everything in a day. We are the current ‘Human Version of Superheroes’ who have been thriving and surviving on a few hours of sleep, trying to make sense of our messed-up lives, to be at the top position.

Adding on to this, social media has taken up over our lives, as everybody shows their side of the perfect story, making the depression and anxiety level go seriously up. All we do is envy the people’s ideal lives on social media and get further depressed. 

However, lately, since the times are changing people have started taking the entire concept of ‘Mental Health’ very seriously. More and more people have begun to talk about it, share their opinion on the same.

The primary focus has been to form a community of people, where anybody suffering from mental health issues could talk it out, discuss their problems and feel better.

What Exactly Is Mental Health?

Mental health is a disturbance in the way the person feels, thinks, behaves, and a combination of this is a clear reflection of the mental disorders. There could be multiple mental disorders, but they all lead to excessive anxiety, depression etc. Mental disorders can also lead to disability or distress in either social work or family activities, which might put you in an altogether an uncomfortable spot.

The way we use ‘Physical Illness’ to describe the problems our body is going through, the same way we describe ‘Mental Illness’, to describe the mental disorders our mind is going through.

There is another term used by doctors: SMI (Serious Mental Illness), which is used to describe the second level of mental problems. Such illness primarily interfaces with the with many events taking part in our lives.

When we talk about the types of mental health, there are multiple types. In this thread, we will discuss the major types of mental health which individuals have been facing lately:

1. Anxiety Disorders

This is the most common type of mental illness faced by individuals. In this case, the individual faces a significant amount of anxiety and depression. Some physical symptoms revolve around it, such as rapid heartbeat, dizziness, short of breath. The three primary types of anxiety disorders include:

  • GAD (Generalized anxiety disorder)
  • SAD (Social anxiety disorder)
  • Panic disorder

2. Bipolar Disorders

The bipolar disorder was earlier, commonly known as manic depression. This is one of the most chronic types of mental disorder which is characterized by the alternatives of, the following:

  • Major Depression
  • Mania
  • Hypomania

Bipolar can further be divided into three main types which are-

A: Bipolar I

B: Bipolar II

C: Cyclothymia

3. Depressive Disorders

There are a few standard features in depressive disorders such as irritable mood, feeling anxious all the time, mood swings when the mood changes in every few minutes, feeling sad without reason, feeling empty, etc.

The disorder also gets accompanied by some cognitive changes and somatic, which affects the capacity of an individual to function significantly.

It becomes difficult for the individual to open wake up, operate and finish their daily chores during this time. Some of the common examples of depressive disorders include – premenstrual dysphoric disorder and significant depressive order.

4. Dissociative Disorders

This is one of the rare disorders individuals face while having poor mental health. This is considered a group of psychiatric syndromes that primarily get characterized by an involutory disconnection between the emotions, perceptions, memories and behaviors.

In this case, individuals start to doubt their existence. In this case, it is essential to seek professional help and visit a doctor.

5. Impulse-Control, Disruptive And Conduct Disorders:

This is a condition that is rounded by a group of psychiatric conditions that affect the problems with the self-control of behavior or emotions. Some of the orders, which are a part of this group include:

A: Intermittent explosive disorder

B: Pyromania

C: Kleptomania

D: Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Signs & Symptoms:

When it comes to mental health, nobody has ever had perfect mental health throughout their lives. Everyone does go through their valleys and peaks from time to time.

There could be multiple types of stressful experience in our lives such as loss of a loved one, failure in exams, losing a job, financial crisis, relationship issues etc.

Although the different types of mental disorders experience their own set of symptoms and signs, which do end up varying in the form of severity, there are also some of the familiar characters in adolescents and children, which are:

1. Uneasiness or stress: When we end up feeling panicked, stressed out, worn out, afraid, nervous most of the times.

2. Problem with thinking properly: Inability to properly concentrate on the different problems. Having issues with memory or coming up with logical thoughts. Not able to give in our best in whatever we are doing. Feeling distracted.

3. Changes in Appetite or sleep: Widespread problem we face is our sleep or appetite. Either we feel too hungry and sleepy, or we don’t at all.

4. Mood Changes: One of the most common signs of mental illness has to be mood swings or changes, which involve extreme sadness, happiness at any time, feeling hopeless, laughing at the most strangest things or inappropriate situation.
